County Information
Lincolnshire is a historical county in the east of England. The county is the second-largest of the English ceremonial counties and one that is predominantly agricultural in land use. Lincolnshire is on the East coast of England with the Humber and the Wash forming part of its northern and southern boundaries respectively. Its county town is Lincoln, and other major towns include Boston, Grimsby and Skegness. The four main geographical areas of Lincolnshire are The Wolds, the Fens, the Marshes and The Lincoln Edge, or Cliff, which is a limestone escarpment running north-south along the western half of the county.
Much of the county, with its rural character is reminiscent of a past era, but to the north, along the Humber, ports such as Immingham and Grimsby, and the steel-making town of Scunthorpe stand out in contrast. The most prominent tourist areas are Skegness, Ingoldmells and Chapel St Leonards, where large caravan parks serve the resorts. Mablethorpe, Cleethorpes and Humberston are also increasingly popular tourist destinations.
The fenlands of Lincolnshire attract many birds, and nature reserves such as Gibraltar Point, Saltfleetby and Theddlethorpe draw many bird enthusiasts.
Woolthorpe Manor is famous for being the birthplace of Sir Isaac Newton, who attended The King’s School at Grantham, and Lincolnshire has been home to a number of other famous people, including Charles and John Wesley, and more recently, Margaret Thatcher.
