County Information
Northamptonshire, situated in the East Midlands, is a landlocked county. Its county town is Northampton, and other towns include Kettering, Wellingborough and Corby. A ridge of low hills runs southwest-northeast, and separates the basin of the River Nene from that of the River Welland.
The main architectural feature of the county is the large number of historic mansions and country houses. Barnwell Castle dates from the 13th century, whilst Rockingham Castle, Castle Ashby and Sulgrave Manor, ancestral home of the family of 1st US president, George Washington, date from Tudor times. To the north lies the site of the Battle of Naseby in which Charles 1 was defeated.
The scenery of Northamptonshire is characterised by its great estates and rolling pastoral lands, but is also known for the many reservoirs created on the River Nene and its tributaries. Following the Industrial Revolution, Northamptonshire was well known for its footwear industry, although this has been less the case in recent years. However, its rail and motorway links and location make it ideal for manufacturing and marketing.
